Quit Smoking

If you are planning to quit smoking you must know the facts that the process involves such as the withdrawals symptoms that can last for up to 3 months. The first week you will have the physical withdrawal, however after that the most difficult part will arrive; the Psychological withdrawal which most of the times a sense of loss will be present, anxiety, irritability, headache, and hunger.


There are many ways to avoid or reduce the nicotine withdrawals symptoms, such as gum, inhalers, nasal spray, and skin patches.
Another good option is medications such as
Bupropion (Wellbutrin, Zyban) and Varenicline (Chantix).
Antidepressants have shown some improvements, however they have not been approved by the FDA.

If a smoker, is using any of the above mentioned solutions, therapy and support groups are also
very important so the process can be eased by sharing, and supporting others and vice versa. Since this is not an easy process, it is very important not to quit trying even if it may be discouraging when not succeeding the first times.

At the minute someone stops smoking, the heart diseases risks decreases along with the chances of death, lung cancer, asthma, and many other conditions that may threat your life.

Risks of Smoking

Tobacco is an addictive substance due to the nicotine substance it contains, this is a plant grown or it leaves, that can be chewed, smoked or sniffed for different effects or purposes.

This popular plant, has 19 known chemicals ( ¨tar¨) that causes cancer and 4.000 others. People who want to quit smoking most of the time has tried and failed at least one time in the past. However, this is not a reason to stop trying.

When smoking during a long time period the chances of having health problems will increase some of them are:

  • Brain aneurysms and blood clots which can cause a stroke
  • Coronary artery disease such as angina and heart attacks
  • Low blood flow into the penis causing erections issues.
  • High blood pressure.
  • Cancer (lung (specially), mouth, larynx, esophagus, bladder, kidney, pancreas, and cervix
  • Emphysema, chronic bronchitis and asthma
  • Infertility
  • Lost of taste and smell ability

Nicotine is considered as addictive as cocaine and heroin making it difficult but not impossible to quit, this does not only affect smokers but family, friends and coworkers.
Secondhand smoke it is equally dangerous, people around smokers have more chances of heart attacks, lung cancer, respiratory diseases. Children exposed to second hand smoke also have the risk of having pneumonia, asthma, ear infections and even more worrying Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
